Early Signs of Pregnancy Pregnancy Symptoms

Pregnancy is a time of wonder and change, but it can also be a bit of a guessing game until you have a confirmation. In this article, Claire, a midwife, will guide you through some early signs of pregnancy.

If you suspect you might be pregnant, it's crucial to get a definitive answer as soon as possible, either by visiting your GP or consulting your Midwife. Let's explore the signs, some of which you may already be familiar with, and others that might come as a surprise.

1. Missing a Period

Perhaps the most obvious sign is missing a period. If you have a regular menstrual cycle, missing a period about four weeks after your last one suggests you could be around four weeks pregnant.

2. Nausea (Morning Sickness)

Nausea, often referred to as morning sickness, is more like all-day sickness. This can start around six weeks into your pregnancy and typically subsides around the thirteenth week. However, some women may experience it throughout their pregnancy due to the hormone HCG.

3. Implantation

Some women experience a short, sharp pain in the lower abdomen, which is the sensation of the fertilized egg implanting into the uterine wall. Not everyone gets this symptom.

4. Implantation Bleeding

This type of bleeding can occur as a result of the egg implanting into the uterine wall. It's usually light, often appearing as brown or pinkish discharge, and some women mistake it for the start of a period.

5. Extreme Tiredness

Pregnancy brings a unique type of tiredness. It's not just wanting to go to bed a little earlier; it's an all-consuming exhaustion that can make you feel like crashing on the sofa at the end of the day. This fatigue can be attributed to hormonal changes.

6. Breast Changes

Many women experience changes in their breasts during early pregnancy. They may feel heavier, sore, tender, or have a tingling or pinching sensation behind the nipples. Your body is preparing for breastfeeding.

7. Backache

Backache can mimic period pain and is often mistaken for the start of a period. It's caused by the hormone relaxing, which affects the muscles.

8. Cervical Mucus Changes

Cervical mucus changes as you progress through pregnancy. Initially, it's thin and sticky, but it becomes thicker and stickier due to rising progesterone levels.

9. Heightened Sense of Smell:

Some pregnant women develop an incredibly heightened sense of smell, and common culprits for heightened sensitivity are coffee and tobacco. This change is related to hormonal fluctuations.

10. Funny Taste in Mouth

Some women describe a metallic or unusual taste in their mouth during early pregnancy, known as dysgeusia, which can be attributed to changes in progesterone levels.

11. Skin Changes

Skin changes can be quite variable. Some experience acne and skin issues, while others notice improvements. It all relates back to hormones and tends to settle around the twelfth week.

12. Dizziness:

Dizziness is common in early pregnancy, mainly due to progesterone affecting blood pressure, causing lightheadedness.

13. Hot Flushes:

Although more commonly associated with menopause, some women experience hot flushes in the early stages of pregnancy, usually between four to six weeks.

14. Insatiable Thirst

Occasionally, pregnant women may have an insatiable thirst. While this is a normal symptom, it's essential to stay well-hydrated.

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms and suspect you might be pregnant, it's a good idea to take a pregnancy test or consult your GP.
